Jamaat, NCP, and eight other parties are going on a simultaneous program for four demands

Jamaat, NCP, and eight other parties are going on a simultaneous program for four demands, including the immediate implementation of the July Charter. The parties will soon hold separate press conferences to announce their programs.

Among the demands are the election of the National Assembly through a proportional System (PR system), the creation of a label- playing field (where every one can join the election), and banning the activities of 14 parties, including the Jatiya Party (JaPa).

It is learned that after several rounds of meetings, the parties have agreed to launch simultaneous programs on four demands, including the legal basis and implementation of the July National Charter, and holding the next national election on its basis.

According to the leaked news that Jamaat-e-Islami, NCP, Charmonai Pir’s party Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis led by Maulana Mamunul Haque, Khilafat Majlis led by Maulana Abdul Basit Azad and Ahmed Abdul Quader, Gana Odhikar Parishad led by Nurul Haque, Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party led by Mujibur Rahman Manju, and Bangladesh Nezam-e-Islam Party led by Sarwar Kamal Azizi are joining this simultaneous program.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis will hold a press conference tomorrow, Sunday, to announce the program of the simultaneous movement, according to party sources. Other parties are also expected to announce their programs soon. The simultaneous programs may start from next week.

The NCP and several parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, have some kind of understanding on some issues, including the legal basis of the July Charter. A high-ranking Jamaat leader has admitted to the decision to hold simultaneous programs with several parties.

In this regard, NCP senior joint convener Ariful Islam Adeeb told Prothom Alo, “NCP wants to implement the July Charter through the Constituent Assembly elections. Although some other parties do not directly talk about the Constituent Assembly elections, they agree on the legal basis of the July Charter. We are having informal discussions with various parties on this and other issues. There are also discussions of simultaneous movements on common issues. The matter has not been finalized yet.”

The leaders of the parties say that they want elections in the first half of February, as announced by the chief advisor. They want those elections based on the July charter.

However, there are differences of opinion among these eight parties regarding the demands of the PR system. Some parties want PR in both the lower and upper houses of parliament. While some parties want PR only in the upper house. For this reason, the parties will present their demands for PR in their own way.

Apart from this, the leaders of the eight parties have also agreed on the demand to ban the activities of the Jatiya Party. They say that if the activities of the Awami League as a fascist party are banned, then why should the activities of the Jatiya Party and the parties belonging to the 14-party alliance, which are allies of fascism, not be banned.

Several parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan, and NCP, have been seen playing a vocal role in the National Consensus Commission’s dialogue on important fundamental reforms, including holding elections using the PR system. This time, eight parties are unitedly embarking on a simultaneous program.
